Understanding the gram in South African gold pricing
The gram is the everyday unit of mass in South Africa, and it is the unit most people use when they talk about gold. It sits at the heart of the metric system, so it connects easily to kilograms for larger amounts and to milligrams for tiny quantities. Jewellers, pawn shops and scrap buyers across the country quote gold by the gram, and the same unit appears on scales in workshops and on receipts.
Gold is also traded internationally by the troy ounce, a unit that is heavier than the ordinary ounce used for food and postage. The troy ounce contains a fixed quantity of grams, so a price per gram is simply the world price per troy ounce divided by that fixed figure. This page does that conversion for you.
The usual jewellery purity in South Africa is the high-carat alloy stamped on the piece, and the calculator lets you choose the purity that matches your item. Prices shown here are metal value calculated from the world price, not a shop quote. Buyers use the gram figure to compare offers, check a scrap quote, or estimate what a piece contains before selling.
- The gram is the standard metric mass unit used in daily South African trade.
- Troy ounces price the world market; grams price the counter.
- Choose your purity to see the metal value of your item.
- Treat the result as a reference, not a binding offer.
How we calculate
We do not collect dealers’ prices. Every figure is worked out from the world price, the same way, on every page.
world price per troy ounce÷grams in an ounce×dollar rate×purity×grams in the unit
- World priceSpot gold in US dollars from an aggregated feed 1, recalculated every 10 minutes while the market is open.
- RateThe ZAR rate from central-bank reference data 2. It is a market reference rate, not an official fixing of your central bank.
- Purity and weightFixed constants with their source: see the unit pages. 22k counts as 916 parts gold in 1000.
- WeekendsNo trading, no recalculation: the last price before the close stays, marked “market closed”.
- HistoryThe history and the chart use one series only: daily reference fixings, converted at the rate of the same day. We never join them to the live figure.
Why a jeweller’s price is different
Shops add a making charge and their margin, and buy back for less than they sell. Our figure is the metal alone: the floor of a fair price, not the shop price.
