Calculated from the world price at 01:50 SAST: world price × rate × purity × weight of 1 gram. Not a dealer quote. How we calculate
A jeweller’s price is different. Making charges, the shop’s margin and the gap between buying and selling are added to or taken from this figure.

World price
This page shows the metal value of gold in South Africa, converted into the local currency. The figures come from the world price and a currency conversion, so they describe the raw metal rather than anything you would pay across a counter. Read them as a reference point for what the gold itself is worth at that moment.
Reading the tables
The karat table breaks the same metal value down by purity. Higher karat means a greater share of fine gold, so the value per gram rises accordingly; lower karat alloys carry less. The unit table simply restates that value in the weights people commonly use, so you can compare like with like without doing the arithmetic yourself.
Why a shop differs
A jeweller's tag includes far more than metal. Making, design, stock holding, rent, tax and margin all sit on top, and buy-back offers usually sit below the metal value. That gap is normal and explains most of the difference you will see.
How often it updates
The figures refresh every few minutes while the market is open. At weekends and on public holidays the market is closed, so the last available value stays on screen until trading resumes.
Where to go next
- The calculator, to work out metal value for your own weight and purity.
- The history pages, to see how the value has moved over time.
- The methodology page, to see exactly how each figure is derived.
How we calculate
We do not collect dealers’ prices. Every figure is worked out from the world price, the same way, on every page.
world price per troy ounce÷grams in an ounce×dollar rate×purity×grams in the unit
- World priceSpot gold in US dollars from an aggregated feed 1, recalculated every 10 minutes while the market is open.
- RateThe ZAR rate from central-bank reference data 2. It is a market reference rate, not an official fixing of your central bank.
- Purity and weightFixed constants with their source: see the unit pages. 22k counts as 916 parts gold in 1000.
- WeekendsNo trading, no recalculation: the last price before the close stays, marked “market closed”.
- HistoryThe history and the chart use one series only: daily reference fixings, converted at the rate of the same day. We never join them to the live figure.
Why a jeweller’s price is different
Shops add a making charge and their margin, and buy back for less than they sell. Our figure is the metal alone: the floor of a fair price, not the shop price.
